This comprehensive anthology presents the rich and diverse literature of pre-World War II California in four parts, each introduced by an essay that contextualizes the literary selections. Part I contains folk stories of native American tribes; part II presents diaries and letters of early settlers and explorers; part III contains literature of the 19th-century through World War I, some of which relates to the gold rush, along with examples of writing by Asian immigrants; part IV treats the literature of the period between the Wars.
